This is a drafting stool designed first and foremost to be machined out of a single plywood sheet on a CNC router.

It is heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts design movements. I wanted to create a stool that is beautiful and calls back to that era in both form and materials.

I started by exploring a lot of different existing designs and pulling bits an pieces I liked and remixing them to make something I felt fit the overall feel I was going for as well as the design constraints

After exploring multiple iterations in Solidworks, rhino, and fusion 360 I settled on a design and moved on to fabrication.

I feel I hit the target fairly well. I’m not entirely happy with the final result, but given the time constraint, I’m happy with the final design.

If I were to take this further I would want to explore different fixturing methods for the legs. As is, they are simply held together in the center with wood glue and while this works for demonstration purposes I would want to employ a more resilient solution in future iterations.

I would also look into methods I could use to adjust the height to fit the user. As it is though I did follow the GENERAL proportions set out in Measure Of Man.

Overall though, I’m very happy with the final design from a formal standpoint and I love having this in my shop.
